Gourmets will savour Turkish food, which is often said to be the
best in the eastern Mediterranean.
The Turkish coast, from the island of Gallipolli in the
Dardanelles right up to Antalya, is an ideal area for leisurely
sailing. There are no real difficulties: the wind usually blows
at a constant rate, and is not as strong along the Southern
coast as it is at the Western coast, which lies under the
influence of the Meltemi. Along the rocky coastline there are
numerous safe backwaters, idyllic inlets and unspoilt villages,
where you can just moor at a simple wooden pier. There are also
a number of modern, excellently equipped marinas, in which
harbour life and oriental flair co-exist in a unique mix.
Antique cultural sites are accessible from almost every harbour
in Turkey
Antalya:
Antalya – the town
This lively town of 180,000 inhabitants in Southern Turkey is
one of the big names in the “Turkish Riviera” Behind the modern
façade, there is a mix of modern Turkish lifestyles and ancient
traditions; the city embodies a very special way of life.
Antalya is a popular tourist destination due to its subtropical
climate, magical blossoming landscape, well-kept hotels and good
beaches, as well as an abundance of historical sites. Trips to
Side, Perge, Syllion, and Termessos are strongly recommended.
Antalya – the port and base:
It is no problem to steer into the harbour day or night, as the
water is very deep right up to the port. The few shallow waters
in the South are in the process of being removed. The
authorities provide a sufficiently deep anchoring ground on the
North side of the harbour, An anchor is still necessary, but a
mooring system in being planned. Supplies are readily available
in the harbour.
The port was awarded the “Golden Apple”, an international prize
provided by travel writers and journalists, for its
architectural design, which started with the careful renovation
of the old buildings, and continued with the addition of new
functional buildings with appropriate design..
Gocek:
Gocek- the town
This small, leisurely town with its friendly locals is located
in the far North of the Gulf of Fethiye. Göcek bay is very
attractive, due to its many small islets. The ruins of Arymaxa
are located at the Southern tip of the bay, and ruins of
Byzantine origin can be found on the island of Teresane, which
lies on the opposite side.
Gocek – the port and base:
The yacht harbour is one of the most beautiful in Turkey, with a
breathtaking landscape. Due to good beaconing, it is possible to
steer into the harbour by day and night. The commercial dock in
the harbour cannot be used by yachts. The small piers at the
Eastern side of the bay are reserved for yachts, and were
recently extended. Safe anchorage's can be found at the
Southwestern tip of a peninsula, which is located in the West of
the bay. The sludgy ground provides excellent hold. There is a
good selection of shops in town, where supplies can be bought,
and fuel is available from the town quay.
Cesme:
Cesme – the town
Cesme only stands to gain from increasing tourism, thanks to its
splendid sandy beaches, and improvements in the townscape can be
observed from one visit to the next. The 15th century Genovese
fort has been renovated, the shoreline is becoming more elegant
and the number of shops is increasing constantly. Nevertheless,
Cesme is still much quieter than Kusadasi, for instance.
Cesme – the port and base:
It is possible to steer into harbour by day or night, even
though there are no beacons on the breakwaters or commercial
docks, as the beacons of Kaleyri Sgligi and Kizil Burnu guide
you safely into the harbour. To clear in and out and to refuel,
it is best to fix to the commercial docks or on the Southern
corner of the ferry dock. When the winds are stronger, it is
better to anchor in the open, with in the protective cover of
the breakwaters, which have been extended – the sludgy ground
provides excellent hold. The supply situation in the harbour is
excellent.
Marmaris:
Marmaris is a good starting point for a voyage to the tranquil
and still unexplored Southern coast of Turkey. The picturesque
town lies on a coastal strip of unique beauty, and it is
possible to swim here in May in harboured inlets, with the
panorama of snow-capped mountains. Despite the increasing
numbers of visitors, life in the town keeps moving at its usual,
leisurely pace.
The locals are forthcoming and friendly, and the shore is lined
by a palm-tree promenade several kilometres long. There is a
bazaar for your shopping needs, and while it is still possible
to observe the cook in the smaller restaurants, those in the
harbour are already equipped much more elegantly.
Marina Netsel – the port and base of Marmaris:
Steering into the harbour is simple, since the waterway is broad
and there are no shallow waters. At night, the beacons on both
sides guide you into the harbour. The mooring piers for yachts
are located to the South East of the L-shaped ferry stage. It is
possible to anchor anywhere, so long as traffic is not affected.
There are good opportunities to get supplies in town, and water
can be obtained at several locations on the piers. Diesel is
available at the “L” in the Eastern part of the harbour, but
petrol is only available in town.
Bodrum:
Bodrum – the town
The modern city was built primarily from the ruins of the former
Greek colony, and the harbour is still protected by ancient
Greek breakwaters. The charming town offers interesting
sightseeing and special experiences around the clock: the
harbour promenade is lined with tall palm trees, the St John
fort provides a view of the busy harbour and the picturesque
town during the day, and in the evening you should visit the
more distant alleys and enjoy the excellent cuisine in the
restaurants.
Bodrum – the port and base:
Steering into the marina is simple, as shallow waters are
clearly marked on maps. At night, the beacon on the Western side
of Karada is used for orientation. By day, the citadel of the
town is the most obvious point for navigation. The moorings at
the quay to the North and East of the harbour are reserved for
local-, day trip- and fishing boats. Other yachts are only
allowed to stay at the Eastern quay for a short while to refuel.
On the mooring piers, anchor is dropped on the outside of the
harbour, while the inner side is equipped with a mooring system.
The marina is well equipped for all the needs of the
international yachtsman.
Kusadasi:
Kusadasi – the town
Kusadasi has a picturesque old city centre, a Roman sea
fortress, and exclusive hotels and restaurants, and is
consequently a busy holiday town.
The city, which gained its wealth from tourism, is becoming
increasingly elegant, especially around the harbour. Life at the
market, which is held every Friday, is still the same as it used
to be; this is where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables at
the usual Turkish prices.
The largest ancient city of Asia, Ephesus, can be reached within
30 minutes. Kusadasi is also a good starting point for trips to
the mainland (to the Pamukkale terraces, or to Aphrodisias, for
instance).
Kusadasi – the port and base:
Steering into the marina is simple by day and night, with
shallow waters clearly marked on charts. At night, the beacon on
Güvercin marks the entrance to the harbour. During the day, the
walls of the fort can be seen from far away. It is not permitted
to use an anchor in the port. Instead, two stern ropes are
attached to a mooring line. The harbour is well protected in all
weathers, and all conceivable services are offered in port. |
