France- Cote d'Azur, Marseille,
Hyeres, Cogilin, Cogolin, Antibes
The Cote d’Azur, between the city of flowers Menton and the
always popular Saint Tropez, as well as the coast further West
up to the Iles d`Hyères, is the epitome of Savoir Vivre – and
not only amongst charter skippers. Some of the most expensive
yachts lie in the numerous marinas, and the bustle on-land is
well known – the best restaurants, boutiques and nightclubs are
waiting for guests, and exotic showmen, famous stars inhabit the
coast.
Naturally, this area has another side as well: Grasse (famous
for its perfumes), the artists’ town St Paul-de-Vence, the Musée
Matisse near Nice and Cousteau's Musée Oceanographique in Monaco
are all attractive destinations. |

The sailing area offers rugged rocky coastlines with deep bays
and hidden beaches, which can often only be reached by boat.
Popular destinations just off the coast include several islands
– Ste Maguerite and St Honorat off the Pointe du Croisette in
Cannes, as well as the three islands du Levant, Port Cros, and
Porquerolles off the peninsula of Hyères.
Marseille
Marseille – the city
The bay of Marseille, which was discovered by the Greeks in the
7th century BC, is protected against all winds and surrounded by
green hills. A colony was founded, which soon turned into one of
the busiest trading centres in the Mediterranean region.
Marseille is the most lively port of France, and has a
distinctly multicultural touch.
Vieux-Port – the yacht harbour of Marseille:
The most beautiful yacht harbour in Marseille is the Vieux-Port,
which lies almost in the city centre. The entrance to the port
is lined with mighty medieval fortifications. The entrance leads
to both the yacht harbour (Vieux-Port) and the trading port
(Port de la Joliette-Sud). It is safe to steer into port in all
weathers.
It is important to notice that commercial ships always have
right of way. There are a couple of places reserved just for
transit yachts in the Northern quay, right in front of the
beautiful 17th century town house. The yachts clubs on the
Southern side provide more comfortable and quiet moorings. The
filling station is portside on entry, right by the pilots. A
market takes place once a week 100m East of the Quai de Rive
Neuve. On other days, supplies can be obtained in the numerous
shops in the vicinity of the harbour..
Hyéres, Cogilin
Hyéres – the city:
Just off the coast of the Hyères peninsula, there is a wonderful
sailing area, around three charming, hilly islands with
subtropical vegetation. On Porqeurolles, the Northern coast with
its wonderful sandy beaches is the most attractive. Port Cros is
the most fertile of the three islands, due to its numerous
springs. It has been declared a natural reserve, which can be
explored through organised diving or walking tours. The Ile du
Levant is home to Europe’s oldest nudist colony.
Port d`Hyères – yacht harbour:
A total of 1200 berths are available in the most significant
harbour of the area. Steering into the harbour is simple.
Visiting yachts should report to the port authorities in the
Northern or Southern basin.
Water and electricity are available at all places, as are
showers, toilets and a filling station. The local workshops can
repair any kind of damage, while a shopping centre provides all
supplies, and offers several restaurants.
Cogolin – the yacht harbour:
The terrace-like houses of ‘Marines de Cogolin’ surround a
large, well protected and very quiet harbour with about 1800
berths. Steering into the harbour is easy by day and night. The
reception quay is easily spotted in the middle of the harbour,
just below the port authority’s building. All berths are
equipped with water and electricity, and showers, toilets, and a
filling station are provided. The shipyard can take care of all
kinds of repairs. Several yachting shops, boutiques and
restaurants are available around the Bassin de la Galiote.
Supplies are available in the Casino supermarket.
Antibes:
Antibes – the city
This town of about 63,000 inhabitants gets its name from the
Greek word “Antipolis”. The first settlements in this town were
as early as 400 BC. Surrounded by a medieval wall, the town is
among the most charming of the entire Cote d’Azur, and the
international airport of Nice is only 18 km away.
Port-Vauban – the port and yacht harbour of Antibes:
The old harbour of Antibes, along with the natural harbour of
Saint-Roche, were developed into the most significant yacht
harbour of the coast: Port-Vauban. In daylight, the harbour can
be easily recognised by the conspicuous tour ‘du Recruitment’.
The head of the jetty has to be avoided when steering into
harbour, and particular notice has to be given to the 5m buoys.
You need to report to the reception quay below the control tower
first. Water and electricity is available at all places, and
there are showers, toilets and a filling station. The shipyards
on the western side of the Anse Saint-Roche can take care of any
repairs. Supplies are available in town, especially at the
market..
