The two wild, rugged islands are well known amongst yachtsmen,
not least due to the famous regattas which are frequently held
in Porto Cervo.
Sardinia is rich in contrasts. The luxurious coastline of the
Costa Smeralda is one of the most exclusive places in the
Mediterranean. Some of the largest yachts and most expensive
hotels, which are frequented by international VIPs, are located
in and around Porto Cervo, the main city of the Emerald Coast.
On the other hand, the hinterland of the rest of the island is
rather bare, while the western coast has unspoilt dreamy inlets.
The Costa Verde, incidentally, is not green but rather white:
enormous dunes, up to several hundred metres high, tower in
front of the blue sky.
Elba:
Elba is the ideal stress-free beginners’ area, as Napoleon’s
first holiday island is surrounded by marvellous sailing
territory. The islands of the Tuscany archipelago (Gorgona,
Capraia, Elba, Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio and Giannutri) are
almost all rocky and emerge steeply from the sea. The coastal
waters are thus all deep, and there are almost no tricky
shallows.
Elba itself has several different landscapes. In the West, the
island has an almost alpine character, and Monte Capanne lies
1018 metres above sea level. The interior is much more Tuscan,
with gentle hills, covered in green macchia or olive trees and
vineyards, which often extend right to the edge of the seaside.
Marina Marciana – the yacht port::
The tiny harbour on the northern side of Elba provides safe
anchoring grounds. The massive light tower ruin to the Northwest
is used to steer into the harbour. There is a filling station on
the North Western corner of the harbour. Water is provided at
the north western pier and at the T-shaped swimming platform.
There are restaurants, hotels, and all kinds of shops on the
coastal road and in town. |
